1st. of May 2004 I got a call from my uncle early in the morning. - Do you need any Crown-parts? Still a little bit sleepy, it took a while before I did understand what he ment. - Yes ... but what kind of Crown are you talking about? - It´s a pickup from 1970. I´m here in Jeussen (a tiny little village in nowhere) where I have some work to do. The owner of this place is doing his spring cleaning at the yard and did find a Crown under a tree in the woods. He will send it to a junk yard on monday, so if you want the car you have to be quick, he said. - I´ll be there in twenty minutes, I answered. I must admit that I was more entusiastic than sharp this morning. That I realized when I got to the place... But I made a deal with the owner about the Crown. The asked price was 100 euros which was much less than the value of the parts that I needed from it. But I thought it was better that I´d just take the parts I needed and not the whole car. For the seller it was only the weight of the car that he was interested at, as he would get paid per kilogram when he´d take it to the junk yard. I took the car to my place and I was allowed to take all the parts that I needed for 50 euros, that was a good deal at my opinion. I borrowed a trailer so I could get the car home right away. Back at home our daughter was not so glad. - Oh no, I don´t won´t to live here anymore. This place is soon filled up with ugly Crowns, she almost cryed. She got a little happier when my wife told her that this Crown would be here just temporarily. For a while I was not so sure that it was such a bright idea to have this beast on our backyard. But when I started to wreck it down I found many parts that I needed. Many of them are parts that I did not know were missing from my Crown ... The car had been out of use only for five years and many parts were in very good shape. The starter was almost as good as new, the doorpanels were clean and the Crown had new ignition parts. It is almost amazing how many good and useful parts you can get even from an old and rusty car like this. I was also surprised over how easy most of the bolts and screws opened. After three days of pretty intensive work I was ready to let the Crown go further to its end-station. I was searching for parts that I could need sometimes in future, but did not find any. Until I had brought the car back to the owner. Then I realised that I could have taken also the doorgrips. And if I ever buy a Crown with the same front like this Crown, I´ll propably need the bumper. But to tell you the truth, the bumper seems better at the picture than in reality. And the plastic front did break down to pieces when I was loosing the screws that were holding it at place. And what did happen to this Crown after I brought it back? I have been told that it will be melted down to a piece of iron and then sold to Germany where it will be recycled. If this is true, the Crown will be reborned as a Mercedes. I would have been happy if the Crown had got a better future ... |
